There was frustration. There were good shots. There were too many good shots that failed to find the net. But it was a 1-0 Lobo victory over New Mexico State Aggies Friday at the Lobo Soccer Complex, so the night ended with a bunch of happy and undefeated Lobos. "It was frustrating, but we've played those kinds of games before," said Lobo coach Kit Vela, who saw her young team go to 4-0-1 on the season. "It's a good learning experience, but those are scary games." The Lobos next play Sunday at North Texas and don't return home until Oct. 9 vs. San Diego State in league play.

On paper, it is a game, a stadium, a team that waits for New Mexico like a steel trap hiding in the path of a wolf. This season opener with Oregon will be a tough one for the Lobos. So many things are against them. The Oregon Ducks, for sure, are the nastiest thing in the Lobos' path. They are loaded, cocky, and hungry to crack out of that lowly No. 11 spot in the national rankings and soar into the Top Ten. "They are getting a lot of national hype and we know they are good," said Lobo defensive end Jaymar Latchison. "But we aren't going up there to roll over. They are going to have to beat us."

New Mexico head men's soccer coach Jeremy Fishbein got a big 3-2 win against #25 (Soccer America) Saint Louis in the Lobos' season opener on Wednesday night. On Friday, Fishbein and the undefeated Lobos might have gotten an even bigger win, and they didn't even step on the pitch. The NCAA cleared Notre Dame transfer Matt Armstrong for play. He will be in uniform wearing #9 for the Lobos when they face off against #5 (Soccer America) UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. Saturday at the UNM Soccer Complex.
"Matt has been patiently sitting on the bench waiting for his NCAA waiver to be processed," said Fishbein. "Matt has trained with us every day, but hasn't seen the field in our exhibition matches or against Saint Louis. He was a U.S. Youth National Team player and a three-year starter for the Irish, and is one of the best midfielders in the country. He will be a big boost to our team."Men's Soccer Notes vs. #5 UC Santa Barbara
